    Montgomery, AL, October 21, 2019

  • School Superintendents of Alabama (SSA) is proud to announce the selection of Dr. Jeff Goodwin as the 2020 Alabama Superintendent of the Year. Dr. Goodwin was selected from among nine district finalists, each of whom is an outstanding superintendent. He will be honored at the SSA Superintendent of the Year Luncheon on February 4, 2020 held during the association’s Legislative Conference in Montgomery. Dr. Goodwin will be provided with a Superintendent of the Year ring plus travel expenses to the American Association of School Administrators (AASA-The School Superintendents Association) National Conference on Education, to be held February 13 - 15, 2020, in San Diego, CA. At the National Conference, he will receive a bronze medallion with the Superintendent of the Year emblem, and a plaque from AASA, SSA’s national affiliate and national sponsor of this program. Each state’s winner will be recognized during the opening General Session where the national winner will be announced.

While serving in numerous capacities within education during the past 29 years, Dr. Goodwin has served the last 14 years as Superintendent of the Oxford City School System and is one of the longest serving Superintendents in Alabama. His list of accomplishments, training, organizational memberships (including offices held), and various committees and professional presentations is extensive, and he is held in high regard among his colleagues. During Dr. Goodwin’s career, he has served as a Science Teacher and Coach in the Oxford City School System from 1990-1995; as Assistant Principal of Childersburg High School in Talladega County from 1995-1996 and of Oxford High School from 1996-1998; as Principal of Oxford High School from 1998-2003; as Director of Operations in Talladega County Schools from 2003-2005; and as Superintendent in Oxford City Schools from 2005 to present.

Dr. Goodwin holds a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in Educational Administration from The University of Alabama; Master’s (Ed.S. and M.S.) degrees in Educational Leadership and Educational Administration from The University of Alabama and Jacksonville State University, respectively; and a B.S. in Science and Political Science Education from Jacksonville State University. “Dr. Goodwin’s leadership has propelled Oxford City Schools to new heights even as the poverty level of his students has risen. He is not afraid to challenge traditional practice and instead meets the needs of Oxford’s students in non-traditional methods, choosing time and again to go down a different path to better serve every student in his district. Dr. Goodwin has been very active in SSA at both the state and district levels in various roles. He seeks out collaborative partnerships with others and develops initiatives in his community to directly impact student learning. Dr. Jeff Goodwin is well deserving of this very prestigious award and will be a great representative for Alabama in the national competition.”, says Mr. Ryan Hollingsworth, SSA Executive Director.

Dr. Cynthia McCarty, who represents District 6 on the State Board of Education, had the following remarks upon hearing that Dr. Goodwin had been selected: “Dr. Jeff Goodwin is one of our nation's premier educational leaders. Representing a district with a highly diverse student population, Dr. Goodwin consistently encourages his fine team of educators and staff to achieve excellence--every day. Although academic achievement at Oxford City Schools continues to improve annually, Dr. Goodwin has also focused attention on enhancing high quality and relevant programs in athletics, the arts, and career preparation. Importantly, he strives to meet the needs of all of his students. Never content with last year's results, Dr. Goodwin relentlessly researches the data and creatively motivates his educators and students so that by graduation day each student will have the tools needed to achieve success in life. Congratulations to Dr. Jeff Goodwin for being recognized as Alabama's 2020 Superintendent of the Year.” Cynthia McCarty, PhD.
