Music Theory
AP Music Theory is a rigorous course designed to develop students' understanding of music theory level concepts and skills at an advanced level. Throughout the course, students delve into topics such as musical notation, scales, harmony, rhythm, melody and form. They learn to analyze music scores, identify chords and intervals, and compose music in various styles and genres. The curriculum also covers ear training exercises to improve students' ability to recognize musical elements by ear. Only juniors and seniors are eligible to take this course and must have taken choir and/or band for a minimum of three years.
Theatre
Through engagement in the theatre arts, students enhance their problem-solving and public speaking skills. Collaboration, creativity, and openness to constructive feedback are essential elements at all levels. Theatre develops a wide variety of abilities from safety with power tools to social-emotional intelligence. Students learn about performance conventions, tech conventions, world theatre history, the film industry, and directing principles. Participation in theatre requires students to take the initiative to meet deadlines and work diligently to offer valuable individual contributions that enhance the final performance piece. Students have exciting field trip opportunities for research and performance competitions. We often participate in a variety of community events, such as Breakfast with Santa and Edible Evening.
Visual Arts
In all art classes, students are encouraged to pursue personal self expression while developing visual problem solving skills. Students have the opportunity to explore a variety of materials and techniques such as acrylic paint, watercolor, graphite, drawing/painting inks, print-making, alcohol/paint markers, colored pencils, pastels, charcoal, clay, jewelry making, sewing and collage. Each student is asked to choose a sustained investigation that will guide their art-making for the length of the course. Within that sustained investigation, students enjoy the freedom to select any subject, material, or technique. Instruction is individualized and much of the learning is self-directed.
