Health Sciences Academy
The Health Sciences Academy at Oxford High School is designed for students pursuing careers in biomedical, emergency services, and general healthcare (therapeutics).
Potential Careers
Pathways
Biomedical Sciences
The Biomedical Science courses encompass concepts in medicine, physiology, genetics, and career exploration. The first course in the series, Principles of Biomedical Science, includes a forensic investigation into the death of a fictional person, as well as topics in medicine and genetics. The second course, Human Body Systems, explores various body systems within the framework of real-world scenarios of injury and disease. In the third course, Medical Interventions, students follow the life of a fictitious family as they investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease.
Therapeutic Services
The Therapeutic Services Pathway courses incorporate project and problem-based healthcare practices and procedures to demonstrate knowledge and skills fundamental to a variety of healthcare careers.
Fire and Rescue
The Oxford Fire Science Program partners with the Alabama Fire College to provide seniors with a comprehensive pathway into the firefighting profession. The course spans over both semesters and ends with the state of Alabama Firefighter One certification exam. This certification serves as a stepping stone for students to pursue further education and training, such as the Firefighter Two certification, which can be obtained through a five-week course post-graduation. Successful completion of this program opens doors to full-time firefighter positions across the state of Alabama. Throughout the course, students undergo both education and physical assessments, ensuring they meet the standards set by both instructors and state regulations.
Credentials and Certifications
Upon completion of the Therapeutic Services pathway, students will have had the opportunity to obtain a variety of certifications to enhance their medical skills. These certifications give students the edge needed to compete in the job market.
Certifications
- Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (CPR)
- First Aid
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA)
Student Organization and Competition
