  • Classroom Expectations

    • Be on time for class
      • Even by being a few minutes late, important information will be missed.
      • Students late in the mornings will be marked tardy and sent to the office to check-in.
      • Students late to class during the school (without a note or email from the previous teacher) day will receive a discipline referral for skipping.
    • Be prepared for class every day.
      • Charged MacBook
      • Have a charger to use (I understand other classes require the use of MacBooks and it may need to be charged during class.)
      • Have a pen/pencil and paper ready to take notes
      • If there is a recurring pattern of a student not being prepared for class, I will first conference with the student. If the unpreparedness continues, I will reach out to the school counselor and contact a parent/guardian.
    • Be respectful to everyone.
      • Teachers
      • Other students
      • All school personnel
      • Disrespectful behavior toward an adult or another student will result in a behavior paragraph that will be completed and returned the following school day with a parent/guardian signature. Disrespectful behavior that continues will result in a discipline referral. Consequences are subject to the severity of the behavior.
    • Be respectful of the classroom and the school.
      • Clean up any messes you see (even if you were not the one who made it, but especially if you did)
      • Throw away all of your trash
      • Follow all school expectations while
      • Discipline:
        • Intentionally making messes (i.e., spilling water in the hallway, scattering trash, throwing trash on the ground and not in a trash can, etc.): The student will be asked to clean up the mess that was created and a parent/guardian will be notified. If the behavior continues, further disciplinary action will be taken.
        • Writing/drawing on walls, desks, or other surfaces (i.e., classroom, hallway, restrooms, lunchroom, etc.): The student will be asked to clean off the writing/drawing and a parent/guardian will be notified. If the behavior continues, further disciplinary action will be taken.
        • Destruction of property (school or personal): Immediate discipline referral and a parent/guardian will be notified.
    • All phones and earbuds/AirPods/headphones are put away while in class
      • Phones should not be used at all during class (when a student goes to the restroom, the cell phone should be placed on my desk until the student returns).
      • Earbuds/AirPods/Headphones should be put away at all times unless we are doing an activity that requires them. I will let you know in advance if they will be needed for class.

Digital Device Policy (Specific to Mrs. Mallicoat's Class)

    • Cell Phones/SmartWatches
      • Cell phones should be put away (completely out of sight) at all times during class.
      • If a student needs to use the restroom, their cell phone and SmartWatch should be placed on my desk while they are out of the classroom. There has been an increase in cell phone use in the restroom to record videos for Instagram and TikTok, as well as for posting photos and communicating with others in and out of the school building. If there is an emergency or a need for a student to contact a family member, they will be allowed to go to the nurse's office or the main office to make the phone call.
      • SmartWatches should only be used to check the time. All other activity indicates it is being used to text others.
      • Discipline: See the OMS Student Handbook
    • Earbuds, AirPods, and Headphones
      • All earbuds, AirPods, and headphones are required to be put away during class. These devices are not to be worn as accessories. During class, it is important that I have your undivided attention to provide you with the best possible learning experience.
      • When lessons and activities are expected to require the use of personal listening devices, students will be allowed to use them. They will also be told in advance if they will be needed. It is important to listen in class to know what days these will be allowed. I will verbally tell you as well as make it available in the Weekly Agenda.
      • Discipline: See the OMS Student Handbook

    Restroom Policy

    • Students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to use the restroom during the scheduled restroom breaks. The 8th-grade schedule (including restroom breaks) will be made available on Schoology as well as posted in the classroom.
    • In the event of an emergency, students will be permitted to go to the restroom. Cell phones and SmartWatches are to be placed on my desk while the student is out of the classroom.
